Ippocalyptica Rarely has a record label’s album description been so accurate, but yes, dark medieval atmospheres, melancholic longing, and regal triumph are all accurate descriptors for Euprosopon. This is an enveloping black metal experience, more atmospheric than most so-called atmospheric black metal, and more thoughtfully composed than works by bands with several more years of experience. If Emperor were more medieval and less complex, and had a child with Drudkh, this would be the outcome. Favorite track: Heriwalt.

geisterfaust While not as atmospheric and bass driven as Heilige Land, Euprosopon ditches some of the formulas used before in favor of harder songs and more diverse sounds. Favorite track: Verban.

H.L. "Euprosopon" spreads a slightly obscure black metal atmosphere. The four songs are epic but also accessible. Sure, there are influences from other bands, but all in all ISKANDR play a quite rare and unusual style. You may take Drudkh (which play more repetitive), Ruins of Beverast (which appear far more obscure) or Borgne (which are far more evil and darker) as closest references. A great album for repeated listening! Favorite track: Verban.

Dave Aftandilian One of the most moving, innovative, even transcendent black metal albums I’ve heard in quite some time. The darkness shines so bright. I see the starry path glowing before me, and I step forward out of my body toward enlightenment. Chants from inhuman throats echo all around me. Their buzzing drones resonate in my soul. Soon I feel my throat opening, adding my own tortured, ecstatic cries to this chorus of the blessed damned.

Iskandr now returns with it's second full-length album entitled “Euprosopon”. The album's title expresses the impossibility of the ideal man. However, formulating new concepts of heroism is nessecary to preserve ideas of strife and longing in an age of eternal devaluation. The record departs from previous works in it's more pronounced songwriting, confrontational attitude and triumphant regal flourishes. Euprosopon aims to evoke heroic medieval symbolism, while taking musical cues mainly from Norwegian classics such as Enslaved's “Eld”, the “Dark Sorcery EP” by Aeternus and “...Again Shall Be” by Hades, to enrich it's already established style and sound. Supported by the session drums and production assistance of M. Koops of Fluisteraars, Euprosopon surely will be seen as a definite leap in an attempt to chart a path of noble and austere black metal art.

Euprosopon consists of four tracks, clocking a respectable fourty-five minutes. Battle scarred and worn, the tortured vocals tell, in four cuts respectfully; of defiance in the face of mortal odds, impermanence of kingly might, banishment under pain of death and the resurgence of a new age. The informed listener will detect in the music an increased complexity in composition, range and atmospheric elements. Coupled with an increased clarity in sound while retaining a natural and uncompromising outlook familiar for those who are aware of the previous output of the Haeresis Noviomagi circle, this record will certainly demonstrate the heights this project is yearning to reach.

The guitarist strums out big, chiming chords like a shoegaze band from hell. The drummer, hoping to remind him that this is a metal band, pummels away at his kit. The singer, sounding like she’s stuck in a watery cave thousands of feet below them, lets loose tortured shrieks that seem completely unmoored rhythmically from what the other two are doing.
